Foto-Handys lesen Strichcodes
Während im Handel Funkchips den Barcode ablösen, erlebt das optische Barcode-Prinzip durch Foto-Handys eine Renaissance. Mittels Bilderkennungs-Software werden Schnappschüsse von Plakaten oder Anzeigen zu Produkt- oder Webshop-Links.

Als Nachfolger des Barcodes werden allgemein Funkchips gehandelt. Die sogenannten RFID-Chips sollen in Zukunft Produkte und beliebige andere Gegenstände durch eine individuelle Nummer eindeutig identifizieren und die 30 Jahre alte Strichcode-Technik ablösen (mehr...). Um die Funketiketten zu erkennen, benötigt man allerdings spezielle Lesegeräte, womit die Nutzung der Technik auf absehbare Zeit eher professionellen Anwendern vorbehalten sein wird.

Das bewährte optische Barcode-Prinzip erlebt unterdessen durch die rasante Verbreitung von Foto-Handys einen neuen Boom: Viele aktuelle Handy-Modelle werden nämlich schlicht durch die Installation einer entsprechenden Software zu Barcode-Lesern. Dadurch werden eine Vielzahl neuer Anwendungen möglich, vor allem wenn die Barcodes als Links zu Websites mit weiterführenden Informationen oder auch direkt zum Online-Shop eingesetzt werden.

Besonders interessant dürfte dabei die beliebige Skalierbarkeit der Barcodes sein. So können sie sowohl klein und dezent in Zeitschriften oder auf Produkten platziert werden. Aber auch riesengroß auf Plakatwänden, so dass sie auch auf große Entfernungen lesbar sind - und Fotos beispielsweise auch im Vorbeifahren aus dem Auto geschossen werden können

Die Barcodes, die von Foto-Handys erkannt werden sollen, sind allerdings eine Weiterentwicklung der klassischen Strichgrafik. Die neue Barcode-Generation besteht aus quadratischen Pixel-Mosaiken, wie dem "Qode"-System der US-Firma NeoMedia.
Die Mobiltelefon-Barcodes werden vor allem in Japan schon seit einigen Jahren erfolgreich eingesetzt, vor allem in Zeitschriften oder auf Plakaten.

Derzeit verbreitet sich die Technik aber auch in den USA und in Großbritannien, daher scheint es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis sie auch hierzulande ankommt. So nutzte die britische Kampagne für den letzten "Mr. Bean"-Film Foto-Handys als Link: Passanten konnten eine Grafik auf dem Filmplakat fotografieren und per MMS an eine spezielle Nummer verschicken, um Gratis-Klingeltöne und Bildschirmschoner zu erhalten. Hinter der Aktion stand ein System der Agentur Magnet Harlequin namens "Snap Happy".

Aber mit der Verlinkung von Werbung sind die Möglichkeiten der Technik noch längst nicht ausgeschöpft. So bietet die US-Firma Augme bereits einen Service an, mit dem die Quadrat-Barcodes individualisiert und in T-Shirt-Motive integriert werden können. So wird das T-Shirt zum persönlichen Link, beispielsweise auf die eigene MySpace-Seite.

Und wie groß das Potential der Bilderkennung am Handy noch ist, zeigen die britischen Services MMS & Buy und Thrrum: Sie machen aus CD-Covern Links zur Musik. Dazu muss jeweils nur das Cover fotografiert und an die Nummer des Labels geschickt werden, um Informationen zum Künstler zu erhalten oder Musik, Konzerttickets und Videos zu kaufen.
