CGE&Y Bids for ThyssenKrupp Services Unit
IT services giant Cap Gemini Ernest & Young SA is in the running to acquire the information technology services unit of ThyssenKrupp AG, a deal that would double its size in the German IT services market.
A spokesperson at Dusseldorf-based ThyssenKrupp told ComputerWire that it had received bids from a number of companies, but does not expect to make a decision until next year. The division, called Triaton, has approximately 2,200 employees and posted revenue of 350m euros ($405m) in fiscal year 2002. It provides IT services to the automotive, chemicals and manufacturing sectors.
Paris-based CGE&Y has made no secret of its German ambitions. In May 2003, Pierre Hessler, global board member for Cap Gemini Ernst & Young told ComputerWire: "Before I die I hope to have acquired two companies in Germany."
He said: "We have been seeking companies to buy since the Ernst & Young acquisition in 2001. We already have 2,000 people in the market, but we are in regular talks with companies like Plaut, debis systemhaus, and are interested in firms like gedas and Softlab."
In January 2003, it emerged that talks to establish a partnership between Deutsche Telekom's T-Systems services unit and CGE&Y had broken down after the two companies failed to agree on the financial structure of any deal.
CGE&Y already has some of its largest outsourcing contracts in the German market, including an estimated $400m 10-year project with German engineering firm Hochtief AG, from which it took on 250 employees in July 2001.
Last month, it ended months of speculation by finally bidding for French systems integrator Transiciel SA, with an offer worth 244m euros ($284m).
