Chance of BPC reunion grows as Uralkali lures bids
19:30 UK, 23rd Oct 2013, by Agrimoney.com
...
The chances of a reformation of the Belarusian Potash Company appeared to grow larger as a fourth potential buyer emerged for the controlling stake in Uralkali owned by Suleyman Kerimov, who is seen as a stumbling block for a reunion.

Alyaksey Khotsin offered to buy the 22% stake in Uralkali owned by Kerimov and a further 11% owned by associates, according to local media, a deal that would, at market values, be worth some $5.3bn.

Mr Khotsin, who is Belarusian born, and his son moved some 10 years ago to Moscow, where they own about 1.8m square metres in commercial property...

"I had thought that it would be a couple of years before we would see a reunion between the two," John Chu, analyst at broker AltaCorp Capital, said.

"Buying out Kerimov is a big deal. It looked like it might take a long time.

"But it looks like we may have taken the first and second steps towards a reconciliation."...

Russia has not been extreme in terms of retribution," Mr Chu told Agrimoney.com...

Potash Corp. posts 28% price drop as Uralkali raises output
BY CHRISTOPHER DONVILLE, BLOOMBERG NEWS OCTOBER 24, 2013

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc., the world’s largest fertilizer producer by market value, said the price of its namesake crop nutrient slumped 28 per cent after the company’s largest rival announced plans to raise output.

Potash Corp. received an average price of $307 a metric ton for its potash in the third quarter, down from $429 a year earlier, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based company said today in a statement. Third-quarter net income dropped to $356 million, or 41 cents a share, from $645 million, or 74 cents, a year earlier as potash sales volumes fell.

“Fertilizer customers faced with uncertainty act with extreme caution,” Potash Corp. Chief Executive Officer Bill Doyle said in the statement. “This was the case during the third quarter, particularly in offshore potash markets, where significant purchases were delayed as Russian producer pronouncements left buyers waiting in anticipation of weaker prices.”

Buyers of potash, a form of potassium used to boost crop yields, have deferred purchases since the end of July after OAO Uralkali, the world’s largest producer, quit a sales accord with its Belarusian rival and announced plans to boost output and take a larger market share. The move sent shares in potash producers tumbling globally on expectations of lower prices.

‘Trying Desperately’

“The quarter is really reflective of just a market that is trying desperately to find equilibrium,” Jeffrey Nelson, a St. Louis-based analyst at Edward Jones, said in a telephone interview. “It’s just reflective of what’s going on in the potash marketplace and the uncertainty posed by moves by the Russians.”

BHP sticks to "wait and see" with $14 bln potash plan
LONDON | Thu Oct 24, 2013 10:36am EDT

LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company, said on Thursday it would stick to a "wait and see" approach in its expansion into potash, as it continues to seek potential partners for a $14 billion Canadian project.

BHP plans to invest $2.6 billion over the next four years in the Jansen potash project to keep its options open, but has delayed production until at least 2020, looking for the right time to enter the market for the fertiliser ingredient.

Answering questions from shareholders in London on the impact of changes in the potash market after the breakup of one of two dominant cartels - the joint venture between Russia's Uralkali and Belaruskali in neighbouring Belarus - CEO Andrew Mackenzie said BHP was progressing at Jansen, but was cautious.

"We are derisking the project by doing some of the technically difficult (work) such as sinking the shafts - that will be complete in three or four years and then we can move very fast," he told the annual general meeting.

Belarus Wants Ransom for Potash Exec, No More Pirate Talk for Arctic 30

1. Lukashenka makes ransom demand in potash case

Having already won some face-saving concessions from Russia in its fight over a busted-up potash cartel, Belarus is demanding payment before it releases the detained Russian director of the defunct joint venture, Bloomberg Businessweek reports.

Belarus has been holding Vladislav Baumgertner, chief executive of Russian potash producer OAO Uralkali, in Minsk since August, resisting Russian appeals for his release.

On 23 October, Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka demanded payment for unspecified damages from Russia in return for freeing Baumgertner.

Radio Free Europe writes that Putin planned to meet with his Belarusian counterpart to discuss the Uralkali issue that led to Baumgertner’s abuse-of-office charges in Minsk.

The two are already set to meet at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council summit meeting today and tomorrow, but RFE predicts the Putin-Lukashenka potash discussions will be “tense meetings on the sidelines.”

Putin discusses Uralkali topic with Lukashenko, effect of Ukraine-EU association deal with Yanukovych - press secretary
25 October 2013, 12:10

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the controversy surrounding potash miner Uralkali with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko and explained to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych why Ukraine's entry into the Customs Union, formed by Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, would become impossible if Kyiv signed an association agreement with the European Union.

The topic of Uralkali was "briefly addressed at Vladimir Putin's meeting with Alexander Lukashenko yesterday," the Russian president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

When asked whether the Belarusian authorities might take certain steps following the presidents' meeting, Peskov declined to comment on this issue.

The planned signing of an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU and its anticipated impact on Kyiv's relations with the Customs Union were discussed by Putin and Yanukovych over dinner on Thursday, Peskov said.

"This topic was addressed as a follow-up to Putin's reply to a reporter's question during the press conference," he said.

Belarus plans to boost potash sales to China
Fri Oct 25, 2013 8:15am EDT

* BPC says to supply a "significant amount" per year under draft deal

* Overture to China follows break-up of Belarus-Russian potash venture

* BPC has been on sales drive since breakup of Uralkali JV

MINSK, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Belarus, trying to build up trading momentum after the collapse of a joint venture with Russia, plans to increase potash supplies to China, the world's biggest consumer of the crop nutrient, Belarus said on Friday.

Belarus' sales alliance with Russian potash giant Uralkali broke up in July, threatening to push down prices and causing an economic headache for Belarus, where potash exports account for 12 percent of state revenue.

The trading arm of state potash producer Belaruskali - Belarusian Potash Company (BPC) - said it had signed a three-year draft supply contract with China's Sinofert Holdings .

Sinofert, which is China's largest fertiliser supplier and distributor, confirmed the framework deal to Reuters.

The breakup of the alliance between Uralkali and Belaruskali has left North America's Canpotex Ltd, owned by Potash Corp , Mosaic Co and Agrium Inc, as the last global potash-trading partnership. Potash Corp expects Canpotex to sign a new contract with the Chinese firm in early 2014.
