Solar City Earnings in Focus
According to our estimates , SCTY is expected to lose 46 cents for the quarter. This is a bit of a reduction from two months ago, as the analyst consensus stood at a 43 cent loss then. However, it is worth noting that estimates have trended a little higher lately, as the most accurate estimate is slightly higher than the consensus, giving SolarCity an Earnings ESP of 2.17%.
This positive ESP, when combined with the company's current Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggests that the firm might be in for a modest beat when it reports earnings. Furthermore, it is worth noting that estimates for the current year and next year have also come down, so a solid guidance reading would go a long way to reversing this sluggish estimate trend.

However, this run-up in SCTY shares seems to have hit the brakes. Although this market favorite reported a loss that was narrower than expected, a weak fourth quarter guidance dampened investor mood .Solar City surpassed our estimate on both the bottom and top lines. The adjusted loss per share came in at 43 cents versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 46 cents. Revenues climbed 52% year over year to $48.6 million and surpassed our estimate of $42 million.
Robust performances were credited to new energy contracts, a huge level of panel installations, and record lease revenues. The company installed a record 78 megawatts (MW) during the quarter, bolstered by a 151% year-over-year increase in residential demand.Solar City nevertheless provided weak guidance for the fourth quarter. The company projects adjusted loss per share of 55–65 cents, much wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 49 cents. In addition, SCTY expects to install 101 MW of new solar panels and thus reiterated its full-year guidance of 278 MW in deployment......

Einziges Hindernis sind die rel. langen Vertragslaufzeiten.
Aber das Geschäft blüht jedenfalls! Definitiv....

We will see!
....Even the two big U.S. producers, First Solar (FSLR) and SunPower (SPWR), focus most or all of their production in foreign countries. FSLR has 85% of its production lines in Malaysia. SunPower has its production capacity located in France, Malaysia, Mexico, and the Philippines.
There is a reason even the U.S. producers choose to build their production facilities overseas. Maybe SolarCity is seeing some other incentive to produce in the U.S. (perhaps some tax incentives), but fundamentally, taking such an approach doesn't make much sense.
Tariffs
I don't think that basing an investment decision like that of SolarCity on the existence tariffs is the right thing to do. Trade barriers have a tendency to break down sooner or later, and Chinese producers are more than likely to move to a global production profile, which will bypass U.S. tariffs in the next few years.....
Building a 1-GW facility in New York is sure to cost SolarCity hundreds of millions of dollars, an investment that might take many, many years to return itself.
