Joint Hearing Examines Oil Markets, Price Increases
December 11th, 2007
WASHINGTON – On the day that the two Senate subcommittees held a joint hearing to examine speculation in the crude oil market, U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, reiterated his belief that raising taxes on domestic oil production will not help solve America’s energy challenges.
Tuesday morning, the Subcommittee on Energy of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee held a joint hearing to investigate the possible role of speculation in recent crude oil prices. The hearing featured testimony from market analysts and from Guy Caruso, Administrator of the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
“It is important for us—and the American people—to understand how the price of oil is set. Oil is a global commodity, trading in markets like many others. American companies do not set the price of oil, and with 77 percent of the world’s oil reserves located outside of our country, we have little control over prices. It is therefore imperative that we focus on increasing our domestic production as part of an overall strategy to reduce consumption,” Domenici said.
“As we work to finalize an energy bill here in the Senate, we should also realize that the current proposal on the table could actually make things worse. I strongly support the elements of the bill that will lead to less oil consumption, like increased CAFE (fuel economy) standards and a Renewable Fuels Standard, but increasing taxes on domestic oil and natural gas production is the wrong thing to do right now. History tells us that these efforts lead to higher prices and make it tougher to meet increased demand. The Senate should reject these massive taxes and focus on measures that will reduce costs over the long term,” he continued.
Domenici pointed out that according to the EIA, global demand for oil is projected to rise by 1.1 million barrels per day this year and 1.5 million barrels per day next year. On the other hand, U.S. domestic production is expected to increase by just 0.3 percent in 2007, and estimates of our domestic refinery capacity over the next several years have actually been downgraded. This means that the United States is continuing to lose ground in our efforts to meet demand, making us even more dependent on foreign oil.

How the Mob Makes Money on Wall Street
TRADING SCAMS
THE BOX: Mob-affiliated traders control the market for a stock and its price by trading it among themselves--enforcing their control through bribery, violence, and intimidation. They then unload the stock on the public at an inflated price and, sometimes, sell it short to profit when the shares go bust.
REGULATION S: Through offshore accounts, Mob members illegally buy cheap stock issued under Regulation S of the securities laws--supposedly reserved only for foreign investors. The cheap stock is sold on the open market at vast, riskless markups.
FLIPPING: Mobsters, through front men, quickly unload, at inflated prices, stocks that are the subject of hot IPOs issued by firms they control.
BROKERAGE SCAMS
HIDDEN OWNERSHIP: Through front men who have no criminal records, the Mob controls, or has hidden ownership stakes in, at least two dozen NASDAQ brokerage firms.
TRIBUTE: Mob members get kickbacks from brokerages for protecting them from shakedown attempts by other mobsters.
EXTORTION: Mobsters, working with short-selling confederates, demand payments in return for not shorting the stocks issued by penny-stock and microcap brokerages.

U.S. Senate Endorses Rockefeller Proposal for Coal-to-Liquid Development
Tax Credit Extension Will Keep CTL Headed In the Right Direction
By Huntingtonnews.net Staff
from Jay Rockefeller News Release
Washington, DC (HNN) – Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) announced Monday, Dec. 17 that the U.S. Senate has endorsed a proposal to keep the development of coal-to-liquids (CTL) technology advancing in the right direction. The measure was included as part of the 2007 Farm Bill that passed the Senate late Friday night by a vote of 79-14.
“There is no single alternative fuel source that will address our growing energy needs and lessen our dependence on foreign energy. The responsible use of clean coal to meet our electricity and transportation needs must be in the mix,” Rockefeller said. “The overwhelming support of the Senate sends a clear message: Coal conversion is a technology worth investing in. But along with tax credits, we need to go one step further and begin a substantial federal government investment – along the lines of the Manhattan Project – to begin researching and developing a workable solution for carbon capture and sequestration.”
Specifically, Rockefeller measure extends the alternative fuel tax credit for CTL development for three more years. To qualify, developers will need to demonstrate that they can capture 50 percent of the carbon emissions from a CTL facility over the next two years; then 75 percent by 2010. The Farm Bill is a major agricultural assistance bill that included tax incentives aimed at spurring rural development that includes tax incentives aimed at other alternative fuel research, such as ethanol and other biofuels, natural gas and wind power. Earlier this year, Senator Rockefeller worked with his colleagues on the Finance Committee to win a similar endorsement for this plan.
Senator Rockefeller has long-supported efforts that would promote CTL development and believes CTL can and must meet high environmental standards. Currently, he’s working on legislation that would create a Future Fuels Corporation – a large scale joint government and private effort to finally solve carbon capture. Rockefeller noted that the ability to capture industrial carbon emissions will be the challenge of the coming decades and is crucial to addressing the problem of global climate change.
Rockefeller also promoted CTL development in legislation he authored earlier this year to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration. The Senator is advocating for the creation of a national center of excellence to develop coal-to-jet fuel technologies. Rockefeller noted that several countries around the world already use fuels derived from coal with great success -- and the U.S. military has some projects underway, specifically, the Air Force is already testing the use of coal-based jet fuels.
The Farm Bill now goes to the U.S. House of Representatives for its consideration.
