Verizon Business Adds Nortel Services for New Managed Telepresence Offering
TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/13/08 -- Verizon Business(2) has selected Nortel(1) (TSX: NT)(NYSE: NT) to help deliver a new managed telepresence offering that allows organizations to collaborate over IP networks.
Telepresence makes real-time, life-size visual communications and collaboration as effective as 'being there,' helping companies increase staff productivity while lowering operating costs and reducing environmental impact.
Companies can maximize these benefits by leveraging Verizon Business' expansive global private IP network with Nortel managed telepresence services provided from Nortel Multimedia Network Operations Centers (MNOCs) around the world.
By Nortel's calculations, a company spending as much as US$23 million annually on travel can use telepresence to recover as many as 385,000 hours of lost productivity, reduce its carbon footprint by up to 4,200 tons and save up to US$7 million.
"The power of our joint telepresence solution with Verizon Business is of major value to customers," said Joel Hackney, president, Enterprise Solutions, Nortel. "We're delivering the best possible user experience with an industry-unique model that supports standards-based telepresence, high definition, standard definition and desktop video conferencing platforms."
"Yet we're able to provide this in a highly integrated fashion that is extremely easy to use for both internal and business-to-business conferencing," Hackney said. "Working with Verizon in this manner supports Nortel's goal to become the preferred partner in unifying all communications through leading products, software and services."
"This new Nortel-based managed service addresses the growing demand for advanced video collaboration services among our multinational customers," said Nancy Gofus, senior vice president of global business products for Verizon. "Combining Nortel's capabilities with the power of Verizon Private IP(2) and leading video platforms enables us to deliver a high definition and high-performance meeting experience for our customers."
Nortel managed telepresence services include complete set-up and management of high-definition (HD) video conferencing and collaboration, including such concierge-like amenities as web-based reservations and pre-configured, pre-connected conferences.
This makes set-up and operation of video meetings as easy as walking into a conference room, allowing participants to focus on the meeting rather than the mechanics. It also improves efficiency and speeds decision making and problem solving.
In addition, Nortel offers video bridging and gateway services, allowing enterprises to take full advantage of video systems from multiple equipment providers by enabling them to interoperate. This is especially important for business-to-business conferencing between companies using video gear from different suppliers. Nortel's global MNOC infrastructure supports these seamless connections with employees, customers, suppliers and others.
Proactive testing, 24/7 network performance monitoring, recording, on-demand playback and metrics reporting are also part of Nortel's managed telepresence services portfolio.

TORONTO, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Telus Corp (T.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Canada's No. 2 phone company, said on Wednesday it is buying new technology from Nortel Networks Corp (NT.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz)(NT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) that lets telecom companies quadruple the capacity of their networks.
Telus's deployment of 40G optical technology from Nortel, North America's biggest maker of telephone equipment, comes after rival Canadian telecom group BCE Inc (BCE.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) announced in September that it would be using it.
Financial terms weren't disclosed.
The Nortel technology delivers speeds of 40 gigabits per second (Gbps) -- about four times faster than today's high-end networking speeds -- over fiber-optic cables thinner than a human hair.
Current high-end network speeds of 10 Gbps can support the bandwidth of 1,000 high-definition television channels simultaneously.
Telecom companies are looking for ways to quickly and cheaply bulk up their networks as demand for bandwidth explodes, driven by the popularity of online video, music and gaming. (Reporting by Wojtek Dabrowski; editing by Peter Galloway)

'40G Ready' Express Network Adds Capacity to Meet Increased Customer Demand
http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/081203/0457407.html
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(MARKET WIRE)--Dec 3, 2008 -- Western Power Distribution Group company, SURF Telecoms, is using a Nortel(1) (Toronto:NT.TO - News)(NYSE:NT - News) optical solution to unleash additional capacity on its regional optical network. SURF Telecoms is a southwest and Wales-based supplier of managed services including dark optical fibre, carrier wholesale bandwidth and leased lines. The enhanced optical network from Nortel will address the growing demand for high-capacity services in the southwest of the UK.
The express network, due to come into service this month, will help SURF Telecoms activate and deliver services rapidly and efficiently across the southwest. The network upgrade also extends the efficiency of SURF Telecoms' existing WDM networks and operations by aggregating more traffic onto 10G before regional transport.
The Nortel solution can help SURF Telecoms get up to four times the existing capacity when required by simply plugging 40G transponders into the existing Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 terminals on the SURF Telecoms optical network.
In the UK the exodus from cities to rural areas is continuing with people seeking an improved work to life balance and teleworking becoming a growing trend. Opting out of the city commute is one thing, but sacrificing the convenience of fast, modern communications isn't an option for most. For many it is the ease and availability of modern communications in rural and semi rural areas that provides the opportunity to live and work in these communities.
SURF Telecoms' express network is aimed at helping its service provider customers meet increasing consumer demand for bandwidth-hungry applications such as Internet television, high-definition programming and maintaining high service levels generated by rapidly growing business network traffic. SURF Telecoms customers include communications providers, broadband ISPs and broadcasters, systems integrators, communications intensive businesses, utilities, corporate sector business and the education and health sectors.
"Our customers demand more bandwidth everyday. They want to use our services to deliver faster Internet access, high-quality video streaming, and the ability to support higher bandwidth business services and applications," said Steve Blew, commercial manager, SURF Telecoms. "Nortel's solution is simplicity itself in that it enabled us to continue to use SURF Telecoms existing network assets, increase network capacity and speed up service delivery across the whole of our region. Our network investment is protected too, as by using 40G transponders, we can simply scale the existing network to four times the bandwidth capacity without any network re-engineering."
"SURF Telecoms is upgrading its network to ensure its customers can ride the building UK bandwidth wave," said Peter Newcombe, president carrier networks, Nortel. "The Nortel solution delivers competitive advantage by adding a highly scalable express layer across its existing optical networks cost-effectively, optimising management processes and increasing network capacity quickly. As a result there are no bottlenecks and all investments are protected well into the future."
The SURF Telecoms express network is built with the Nortel Optical Multiservice Edge (OME) 6500 optical convergence platform and Common Photonic Layer (CPL) line system with ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer), key products that enable the migration to a more agile, adaptive, all optical network.
Nortel's Optical Network Manager is being used by SURF Telecoms to conduct network wide administration, monitoring and planning from a single management centre. This enables rapid troubleshooting, fault resolution and traffic management with no need for technical personnel to visit individual network nodes.

New Network Powers High Definition TV, Video on Demand and Other High Bandwidth Services
http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/081203/0457406.html
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(MARKET WIRE)--Dec 3, 2008 -- Mediacom Communications(2) has selected a Nortel(1) (Toronto:NT.TO - News)(NYSE:NT - News) 40G Optical Solution to expand its network and meet increasing bandwidth demands. The new network will run across Chicago, Illinois, Des Moines, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska delivering telephone, high-speed Internet and TV services - including high-bandwidth applications like HDTV and Video on Demand (VoD).
With more and more TV shows being offered in HD and consumers becoming increasingly accustomed to watching what they want, when they want, services like HDTV and VoD are becoming a 'must have' in many households. These services vastly increase the amount of bandwidth required from the network with HD video alone using five to nine times more bandwidth than standard digital video, putting pressure on operators to expand or upgrade their networks to meet the demand. Nortel's 40G solution will provide Mediacom with the network capacity to deliver these services, as well as Internet and phone services.
"At Mediacom our customers count on us to bring them the latest communications and entertainment services. Nortel's 40G solution ensures we'll have the capability to keep delivering even as demand continues to grow and drive up our bandwidth needs," said JR Walden, senior vice president of technology, Mediacom. "With four times the capacity of a 10G solution and a cost-effective deployment scenario, Nortel's 40G solution demonstrates our continued commitment to bringing the latest technology to the communities we serve."
"HD is transforming user experience, whether it's on TV or the Internet, putting incredible bandwidth pressure on networks to give consumers the high quality viewing experience they expect," said Philippe Morin, president of Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. "Nortel's 40G solution allows service providers to add the capacity to support high-bandwidth demands on their networks without complex re-engineering. We were able to offer Mediacom all the benefits of a 10G solution in terms of reach and performance without all the extra equipment add-ons of alternate solutions. This makes Nortel's 40G solution a simple and cost-effective way to add bandwidth today and prepare for even higher bandwidth needs in the future with a path to 100G."
Nortel's 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine is a plug, play and evolve technology that is deployable over any fiber. It allows operators to reduce engineering, eliminate equipment and upgrade quickly and cost-effectively from 10G to 40G - and ultimately, all the way to 100G. Using the superior performance of Nortel 40G, Mediacom was able to reduce the number of amplifier sites required along the 470 mile (755km) route from Chicago to Omaha thereby simplifying and reducing the overall cost of the network expansion.
The Mediacom solution consists of the Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 equipped with 40G optics and the Common Photonic Layer line system, key products that enable the migration to a more agile, adaptive, all optical network. Nortel is also providing engineering, installation, test, and turn-up services for Mediacom.

Nortel 40G Will Allow Telus to Carry More Traffic Over Existing Fiber-Optic Network
http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/081203/0457408.html
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(MARKET WIRE)--Dec 3, 2008 -- Nortel(1) (Toronto:NT.TO - News)(NYSE:NT - News) announced today that TELUS(2) will deploy Nortel's 40G Optical solution.
"40G deployment will allow TELUS to add capacity to our existing fiber-optic network, helping us maximize use of that asset to the benefit of our customers and shareholders," said Dave Keegstra, director, Technology Strategy, TELUS.
"With demand for bandwidth continuing to increase, companies like TELUS are looking to enhance network capacity and enable more bandwidth for their customer's needs," said Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. "Nortel's 40G is a plug, play and evolve technology that is deployable over any fiber in a simple network design, giving operators an easy and efficient way to quadruple their network capacity and meet future bandwidth demands."
The foundation of Nortel's 40G Adaptive Optical Engine lies in the company's breakthrough technology that provides four times the capacity of today's 10G networks while keeping the same performance characteristics. This solution includes several technology firsts including Dual Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying with coherent detection that allows 40G operation over a 10G network. Another technology first, advanced digital signal processing, removes all compensation requirements from the network, along with their associated capital and operational expenditures. This makes Nortel's solution simpler and more cost-effective than other approaches that require costly equipment that can carry the information light signals less than half the distance of the Nortel equipment.
Nortel's solution is built on the industry leading Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 convergence platform and Common Photonic Layer line system, enabling a more agile, adaptive, next generation optical network.

Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson and NSN may bid for Nortel’s metro Ethernet business
22 Dec 2008
Nortel’s move to exit from the metro Ethernet networks business vertical has reportedly attracted vendors including Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) says Canada’s Globe and Mail.
The report further adds that Nortel is entertaining three bids out of the four and the deal value is pegged at around $ 2 billion.
The report also speculates that Nortel may consider selling of assets which may see the company exit the carrier networks business instead of filing for bankruptcy.
