Japanese shares were up early
on Tuesday after insurers such as Millea Holdings (8766.T: Quote, Profile, Research) rose on growing relief that U.S. bond insurers may have stabilised, with rising property shares helping boost the Nikkei to a six-week high.
But a lack of fresh buying factors and the downward drag of shares such as mobile carrier KDDI Corp (9433.T: Quote, Profile, Research), which tumbled after a ratings downgrade, kept gains capped
after the Nikkei hit the psychologically important 14,000 level.
Tokyo market players said the market, caught between hopes that the bond insurer situation was improving and caution over the fact that few details are out yet about concrete solutions, was running out of steam on the issue.
"It seems now as if the downgrade has been avoided, which has relieved the market,
but of course that hasn't solved the problem," said Yutaka Miura, a senior technical analyst at Shinko Securities.
8:30 AM PPI
Forecast: 0.4%, 0.2% core
Market Consensus: 0.4%, 0.2% core
Energy prices not expected to provide much swing as January food prices provide the lift.
PPI annual growth of 7.8% expected to exceed the quarter century high of November.
The expected 0.2% rise in the core expected to leave an unchanged 2.0% annual gain.
Annual growth surged to 7.2% in November to a quarter century high given the surge in energy price

10:00 AM Consumer Confidence
Forecast: 80.0
Market Consensus: 82.0
Katrina lows of 85.2 likely to be removed as consumers finally retrench.
Mar 03's 61.4 stands as the next significant low point.
Prior to Dec's small gain the decline off Jul's 07 high sums to -22%.
Index stands below the average over the 2001 recession. Lowest since the Oct 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes.
Housing recession, tighter credit, higher oil prices and economic gloom are all contributing.
In Jan the expectations component all but erased the Dec 9% jump higher as present conditions recoverd 2%.
The labor differential (jobs 'plentiful' less 'hard to get') perked up to 3.8 from an upwardly revised (from -0.8% -- the first decline since November 2005) 0.9%. Stood at 11.3 in July.
1 year inflation expectations edged lower to 5.3%. That is also likely to change, but in this case to the upside.
