Micron Technology
So Long,

Semiconductor Stocks Sail on Bullish Predictions for Memory Makers
NEW YORK (AP) -- There was no stopping semiconductor stocks, which surged in afternoon trading on Monday after a slew of analysts predicted good things for computer memory chip makers.
While a handful of flash memory stocks surged on Monday, the biggest mover in the sector by far was Freescale Semiconductor Inc., which confirmed it was in talks for a possible "business transaction," just hours after the New York Times reported it could be in talks with a consortium of investment firms for a leveraged buyout.
At least one analyst -- Deutsche Bank's Ross Seymore -- said if the reported $16 billion deal did occur, which would value Freescale at roughly $39 per share, it could be "favorable for investors."
Shares of Freescale, which had traded between $20.87 and $33.04 over the last year, closed up $6.31, or 20.5 percent, at $37.06, on the New York Stock Exchange. Earlier in the session, shares set a new 52-week high of $37.18.
Although Freescale rumors took center stage, Micron Technology Inc. shares jumped after a JPMorgan analyst upgraded the stock and said the Boise, Idaho, company could benefit from improved dynamic random access memory prices.
"Our checks indicate DRAM memory pricing continues to improve during the third quarter of 2006, ahead of our expectations for roughly flattish pricing," wrote JPMorgan analyst Shawn Webster in a note to clients.
Webster upgraded the stock to "Overweight" from "Neutral."
Shares of Micron closed up 69 cents, or 3.9 percent, at $18.57 in Monday trading on the NYSE.
Another maker of flash memory, SanDisk Corp., rose more modestly on Monday after W.R. Hambrecht analyst Daniel Amir speculated the Sunnydale, Calif., company could benefit from increased flash memory orders from Apple Computer Inc., which he expects to roll out higher density iPod models.
"Our checks indicate a significant build roadmap for Apple in the next few months which will result in major NAND flash ordering," Amir wrote in a note to clients. "We anticipate that this build is to result in a tightening of the NAND flash market in late September or early October and will result in NAND flash pricing to increase slightly in the fourth quarter."
Shares of SanDisk closed up 22 cents, at $56.72, on the Nasdaq.
Spansion Inc., a joint venture between chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Japan's Fujitsu, closed up 66 cents, or 4 percent, at $17.10 in Monday's trading after UBS analyst Alex Gauna said he believed the company could be winning market share, helped in part by increased business from mobile phone maker Motorola Inc.
"We believe Spansion continues to gain share on Intel Corp. with the most significant new opportunities arising in Motorola handsets," Gauna wrote in a note to clients.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Sector Index closed up 2.4 percent, climbing to 10.34 points to a 449.03 close on Monday.

A "memory supercycle" could be in the making, which would benefit some of the world's major chip companies, according to a new report from Caris & Co.
The research firm said a supercycle would be good news for Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ), Advanced Micro Devices (nyse: AMD - news - people ), Applied Materials (nasdaq: AMAT - news - people ), KLA-Tencor (nasdaq: KLAC - news - people ), Micron Technology (nyse: MU - news - people ) and Novellus Systems (nasdaq: NVLS - news - people ).
Caris & Company rates all the stocks at "buy" except AMD, which is rated "average."
Rick Whittington, an analyst at Caris, wrote in a recent report that chip companies may benefit from the 3D Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Vista interface because it requires "materially greater" memory in PCs.
The new Windows Vista graphical user interface is expected to be three-dimensional and include animation, transitions and fade-outs. Not all computers will be able to take advantage all the new graphical visualization capabilities, but new search and organizational features will be available to everyone.
Intel shares have a 52-week range is $16.75 to $27.49. AMD has a 52-week range of $16.90 to $42.70.
Sept 15 (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp. (6502.T: Quote, NEWS, Research) said on Friday it would buy certain chip-related patents from Micron Technology Inc. (MU.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and secure licences for all the patents held by Micron unit Lexar Media Inc. for $288 million, ending lawsuits between the Japanese electronics maker and Lexar.
Micron in June acquired Lexar Media, which has been in a legal tussle with Toshiba since 2002 regarding flash memory patent infringement.
Behind Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research), Toshiba is the world's second-largest maker of NAND-type flash memory chips, widely used in digital cameras, photo-snapping phones and portable music players such as Apple Computer Inc.'s (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) iPod.
Prior to the announcement, shares in Toshiba closed down 1.1 percent at 792 yen, underperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index (.IELEC.T: Quote, NEWS, Research), which sipped 0.4 percent.
Die werden doch nicht fürn Apfel und Ei die Patente hergeben....

Standard and Poor's Equity Research upgraded shares of Micron Technology to "strong buy" from "buy" Thursday on higher demand for dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips.
Micron Technology (nyse: MU - news - people ) is one of the world's largest memory-chip makers. Its DRAM and flash-memory chips are used in electronic products like computers, cell phones, USB storage devices, digital cameras, or MP3 players.
"We see an improving story at this memory-chip maker," wrote S&P Equity Research analyst Thomas Smith in a report to investors Thursday. He raised his price target on Micron to $26 from $18.
With memory content per PC increasing for 2007 computer models, demand for Micron's DRAM chips will be high and capacity will be tight, strengthening DRAM pricing right through into 2007, according to the analyst.

TOKYO (AP) -- Japanese electronics company Toshiba Corp. has settled an intellectual property dispute over flash memory chips with U.S. semiconductor maker Micron Technology, the two companies announced Friday.
Toshiba will purchase some of Micron's semiconductor technology patents and also license patents previously owned by Lexar Media Inc. for $288 million, according to a joint statement released Friday.
Toshiba had been embroiled in a prolonged legal battle over trade secrets for flash memory chips with Lexar, which was acquired by Micron earlier this year.
Lexar demanded that Toshiba halt U.S. imports of flash memory chips, which are popular in many electronics gadgets, because the American company claimed they infringed on its intellectual property rights.
"We appreciate that Micron ... allowed the parties to work together to bring all outstanding litigation and claims to a full and final resolution," the statement quoted Masashi Muromachi, a Toshiba executive vice president and president of Toshiba's in-house Semiconductor Company, as saying.
"We ... have the highest respect for Toshiba as an innovator in flash technology and see no merit in continuing to pursue this litigation," Micron Chairman Steve Appleton said in the statement.
The settlement comes after Lexar filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission earlier this year seeking an exclusionary order to prohibit Toshiba from exporting the disputed products to the United States.
In March, a U.S. district court jury found that Toshiba had misappropriated patents from Lexar, prompting Toshiba to appeal the case.
Ich persönlich hätte mir ein bisschen mehr erwartet...

Rob Zenilman submits: Within a specific sector, gross margins can differ dramatically, due to the different nature of their businesses. Among the memory chip manufacturers tracked here, gross margins ranged from 24.8% (NASDAQ: STEC - News) up to 85.7% (NASDAQ: RMBS - News). The companies that have drastically higher gross margin are what I like to call "gross margin kings".
What separates out the companies with the four highest gross margin rates is that they earn money by licensing out their technology. 88% of Rambus' revenue is from licensing, 100% for MoSys (NASDAQ: MOSY - News), 56% for Saifun Semiconductors (NASDAQ: SFUN - News), 100% for Virage Logic (NASDAQ: VIRL - News) and 25% for Staktek Holdings (NASDAQ: STAK - News).
Total Gross Gross
Quarter Revenue Profit Profit
Ticker Company Ending ($mm) ($mm) Margin (%)
CY Cypress Semiconductor 07/06/06 $265.24 $113.89 42.9%
IDTI Integrated Device Technology 07/02/06 $185.54 $84.24 45.4%
ISSI Integrated Silicon Solution 03/31/06 $53.25 $5.64 10.6%
MOSY MoSys 06/30/06 $2.34 $1.96 83.7%
MU Micron Technology 06/01/06 $1,312.30 $329.80 25.1%
RMBS Rambus 03/31/06 $47.25 $40.48 85.7%
RMTR Ramtron International 06/30/06 $10.25 $5.40 52.7%
SFUN Saifun Semiconductors 06/30/06 $17.38 $13.93 80.1%
SNDK Sandisk 07/02/06 $719.19 $289.01 40.2%
SSTI Silicon Storage Technology 06/30/06 $107.73 $27.37 25.4%
STAK Staktek Holdings 06/30/06 $14.42 $5.72 39.7%
STEC Simpletech 06/30/06 $79.52 $19.70 24.8%
However, having high gross margins is no guarantee of profitability. Of the four companies here with gross margins over 70% (and that derive most of their revenue from licensing) - only Rambus has a positive P/E of 62.84.
