Anti-Counterfeiting Covert Security Solution
Strong Authentication for Documents, Products and Packaging for Pharmaceuticals and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDSU (Nasdaq: JDSU; and TSX: JDU) today announced the release of a new weapon in the fight against counterfeiters with the introduction of its latest sophisticated security solution for document authentication and brand protection. The market leader in overt printed security features, JDSU has applied its optical technology expertise to develop Charms(TM), a groundbreaking covert security product.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070904/AQTU070)

JDSU's Charms are printable microstructured taggants -- miniscule particles two to three times the size of a red blood cell -- that can be customized with a customer's logo or graphics and then added to printing ink for documents, labels or packaging. It is the first covert product of this nature that is useable in standard printing ink, and the first solution able to offer very high-resolution graphics on micro-flakes in this particle size range. The easily verified presence of marked micro-flakes on genuine non- counterfeit material provides an additional and unique factor for authentication.

Because they are invisible to the naked eye, Charms can easily be added to documents, packaging or product without affecting any of the visual aspects of the graphic design.

Successful Track Record

Charms are already on track for adoption by several large brand owners in 2007. In addition, JDSU's Charms solution has already been proven in a yearlong, extremely successful pre-release deployment on more than 100 million electronic products. JDSU security pigments are currently used on more than 90 different currencies, as well as on many pharmaceutical and other products.

Ease of Authentication

With Charms, non-experts now have a quick and reliable way to distinguish counterfeit from genuine product -- one of the essential components in the battle against counterfeiters.

"Complexity is an enemy of security, and truly effective authentication, implemented on a large scale, requires a straightforward verification procedure. With authentication using Charms, all that is required in the field are your eyes and a low-cost, portable microscope. Strong authentication for printed materials will never get easier than that," said Kees-Jan Delst, product line manager for JDSU's Flex Products Group. "With our many years of experience in creating trusted document and brand protection products, JDSU is well positioned to satisfy the market's need for authentication products."

Product authentication with Charms is a simple visual confirmation of graphics, size, shape, color and texture that requires only minimal training. Charms also include specific attributes that allow forensic use when required.

   Key Benefits of JDSU Charms

-- Security feature can be applied with a standard printing press.
-- Authentication in the blink of an eye: a single low-cost, portable
microscope works for authentication across different documents,
products and/or brands, which is crucial for investigators, customs and
      law enforcement.
-- Protection does not rely on restricted access to the authentication
      tool.
-- Configuration of specific marks at various levels, distinction by
brand, product, region, manufacturer or converter.
-- Usable in combination with an overt solution, mixed in JDSU's
color-shifting ink, or as a stand-alone covert solution.
-- Can be added "just in case," and verified only when and where required.
Protection does not require a minimum for sampling volume, as is the
      case with serialization.
-- Low per-unit cost enables effective protection of extremely high
      volume, fast-moving consumer goods.

'Transmitter-on-a-Chip' Technology
Successfully Demonstrates Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) that Enables Dramatically Smaller Tunable Laser Solutions for Service Provider Networks

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDSU, a leading enabler of broadband and optical innovation, today announced it has successfully demonstrated a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that combines a tunable laser and optical modulator, using a technology known as the Integrated Laser Mach Zehnder (ILMZ). The new PIC will allow JDSU to develop smaller, higher performance and more cost-effective tunable solutions that support faster network speeds.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070905/AQW063)

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20050913/SFTU125LOGO)

Tunable lasers are a key element required for the successful deployment of agile optical networks (AON). AONs are deployed by service providers to scale network infrastructures and replace slow, manual operations with simplified, dynamic network solutions that can quickly respond to fluctuating traffic traveling over fiber optic networks. Research firm CIR predicts that the market for tunable lasers will prosper over the next five years, with compound annual growth of 37 percent and a total market value of nearly $1 billion by 2012.

JDSU's ILMZ-based tunable laser solutions will take up significantly less space in service providers' network equipment racks and use less power, in turn reducing data center rental costs and power bills.

"At JDSU, we believe that a more compact and integrated approach toward tunable lasers is critical as service providers strive for greater efficiency in their networks," said Alex Schoenfelder, vice president and general manager of Integrated Photonics at JDSU. "Integration at the PIC level will help to lower costs and enable high-volume manufacturing that allows us to best serve our customers as network demands continue to increase."

Smaller Form Factors that Leverage Photonic Integration

The new PIC includes a widely tunable laser and Mach Zehnder modulator on a single chip that is small enough to fit on the tip of a finger. It will be incorporated into full-band tunable transponders and transceivers within compact packages, such as the 300-PIN small form factor (SFF) and pluggable small form factors (XFP) starting in 2008. The new technology also enables JDSU to support transmission speeds greater than 11.3 Gigabits per second and is scalable to support 40G networks.

JDSU leveraged its years of expertise at photonic integration to develop the new PIC. Photonic integration technology uses semiconductor processes to form the materials and structures of the desired photonic circuit on a semiconductor wafer. The wafer is then sliced into hundreds of chips, each containing a circuit. After testing, each chip is incorporated into the appropriate product package. This expertise, combined with a sophisticated manufacturing approach is what enables JDSU to incorporate high levels of functionality into tiny chips for many of its optical products, avoiding unnecessary packaging.

History of Tunable Lasers

Recent and dramatic growth in data, voice and video traffic over dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) networks has stimulated demand for tunable lasers, a key element of AONs, as service providers upgrade components within their networks to support more capacity. AONs are based on "dynamic reconfigurability," which allows service providers to simplify network management and optimize network activity by using flexible optical equipment.

Tunable lasers provide dynamic reconfigurability by allowing network operators to switch from one wavelength to another on demand, easing the cost of purchasing, storing and managing spare devices for wavelength management.

Before the advent of tunable lasers, service providers used fixed wavelength lasers, which meant holding expensive inventory to support each wavelength. The overhead associated with managing this inventory was difficult at all levels of the supply chain. Since wavelength activity could not be predicted, providers would often face supply shortages for specific wavelengths, compromising the bandwidth capacity of the network.

Today, a single tunable laser can cover nearly a hundred 50 GHz spaced channels in a DWDM system. They can either be used as a universal source to support a particular wavelength, or can be switched to support different wavelengths on demand. JDSU's new PIC solutions with ILMZ technology will further streamline network management and reduce costs for service providers by providing tunable laser solutions in smaller form factors.

JDSU Introduces Unmatched Test Solution for Labs and Manufacturers

MILPITAS, Calif. and BERLIN, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- JDSU today announced the latest version of its Variable Optical Attenuator for the JDSU Multiple Application Platform (MAP). The MAP Variable Optical Attenuator provides the industry's highest performance optical power level control solution with the lowest optical impairments and the fastest transition speed in its class (up to 25 dB/s). The product will be on display this week at ECOC 2007 in Berlin, September 17-19 (booth 15087).

Because of massive traffic increases resulting from widespread deployment of broadband access technologies, equipment manufacturers are developing products that allow for higher bandwidth, longer reach, and greater flexibility. This leads to more complex devices that require more rigorous testing because of the increased number of operating states. These complex devices include ROADMs, high power EDFAs, tunable transponders, and CWDM/DWDM transceivers that are designed to provide increased throughput, reduced costs, and improved reliability.

To validate these network systems and underlying subcomponents, test equipment must perform the required rigorous testing quickly and accurately. The latest MAP Variable Optical Attenuator was designed with those constraints in mind. Performance features include ultra low insertion loss (<1.0 dB) plus industry-best wavelength flatness and transition speed. An optional built-in power monitor provides comprehensive closed-loop power control while the high power option is rated up to +33dBm for single-mode fiber (+27dBm for multi-mode fiber).

"Consumer and business demand for broadband services is not only a carrier issue because manufacturers are required to provide technologies that expand the performance and capacity of networks," said Bill Mortimer, vice president and general manager of JDSU's Lab & Production Test and Measurement group. "The speed, precision and reliability of the MAP Variable Optical Attenuator will enable labs and equipment manufacturers to further respond to this challenge and help their customers attain a higher level of reliability, efficiency and cost savings."

About the JDSU Multiple Application Platform (MAP)

The JDSU MAP is designed to help manage the test and measurement needs of an industry that requires flexibility and dynamic performance by offering researchers, designers, and manufacturing engineers a platform that exceeds all others with its modularity, reliability, and flexibility.

The MAP is a flexible instrumentation platform used for optical test and measurement applications that is available in two formats: a 19-inch 8-slot Master (MAP+2M00) and a 9.5-inch 3-slot Benchtop (MAP+2B00). They feature a common hot-swappable backplane compatible with over 15 different types of instrumentation cassettes. The MAP Master and MAP Benchtop include a 9-key keypad, color display and remote communication ports.

MAP is used when instrumentation selection needs to be based on current requirements without compromising future requirements. The MAP+2B00 and MAP+2M00 provide the most cost-effective solutions for test sets requiring three or fewer cassettes and four to eight cassettes respectively. In both

cases, future expansions are possible by populating the empty slots (if available) or adding a second independent MAP+2B00 or MAP+2M00.

(Analyse vom 01.11.07)

You have to hand it to JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU) for making a dramatic business decision and sticking to it. Almost three years ago, faced with a severe deterioration of its core optical networking business, the company made a bold move into a whole new business segment when it acquired Acterna Inc., a maker of testing and measurement equipment for broadband and optical networks, for $760 million.

Overnight, the move set up a second core business within the company that was almost as big as its original networking business, and laid the groundwork for a more steady stream of revenues from networking gear maintenance to help keep the company going when sales of the gear itself were slow.

Time has shown this was no fly-by-night move on the part of JDSU, but a well-considered plan that it has stuck to over time. On Monday, the company announced that it will acquire the fiber division of Westover Scientific Inc., for $50 million. Although the deal was much smaller than the groundbreaking 2005 Acterna purchase, it further enhances the company's test and measurement business. Westover Scientific makes fiber optic inspection and cleaning solutions. JDSU in December made another acquisition, purchasing Bank Note Holographics Inc. for $138 million in cash and stock.

It's been a long road back for JDSU, one of the poster companies for dot-com and telecom bubble excesses, but today its progress is indisputable. Fiscal 2007 revenues of $1.4 billion were almost double the 2005 total of $712 million while net losses have narrowed to $26.3 million from more than 10 times that amount just two years prior. - Andrea Orr
