Graphite in 2012: A Wave more than a Bubble
Posted on January 4, 2013 by Alessandro Bruno
During the first half of 2012 the graphite sector was on everyone’s lips. The Vancouver (Cambridge House) conference in Vancouver in January 2012 did not mince its message: Graphite was the ‘raw material’ of the year. In the weeks that followed there was nothing short of a scramble to develop graphite projects, especially in Canada, after years of neglect and indifference as the West seemed all too happy to allow China to dominate that sector along with so many others. Until recently, and not unlike the situation for rare earths, China was seen as maintaining an unchallenged monopoly over graphite. Indeed, China supplies half of the graphite needs of Europe, Japan or North America (combined)..

"..Focus Graphite (OTCQX: FCSMF) and Standard Graphite (TSXV: SGH) have uncovered very high grade resources and the former is relying on these to stimulate the emerging graphene industry.."

Chinese Graphite Miners Put in Strong Performance in 2012
Monday January 14, 2013, 4:15am PST
Graphite miners from China, the world’s top-producing nation, look to have had an excellent run in 2012.
Recently released numbers from China Data Online show that in October 2012 — the latest month reported — Chinese miners of graphite and talcum posted profits of 188.2 million yuan (US$30.2 million), a record for the year and the second-highest monthly total registered in the last 24 months..

China ready to launch Graphene Industrial Production in 2013
Posted on January 10, 2013 by Hongpo Shen
As a new material, graphene in the past years has been developing at amazingly high speed. On December 5, 2012, graphene coated aluminum foil, achieved through a new technological approach, was put into production by Ningbo Morsh Technology Co., Ltd in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, China with an expected annual output of two million square meters. China has been moving quickly to shift graphene out of the laboratory to industrial development and the market. The graphene industry chain is gradually forming in China due to its own domestic demand for advanced materials and the rapid development of graphene industrial technology..

Graphene Patents – Game On
Posted on January 16, 2013 by Graeme Irvine
According to just released data by CambridgeIP and carried yesterday by BBC online news, since graphene was discovered in 2004, there have been 7,531 graphene patents and patent applications globally, through the end of 2012. Chinese firms and research groups lead with 2,204 apparently, with the USA second with 1,754. South Korea comes in a respectable third with 1,160. South Korea’s electronics giant Samsung with 407 is the single company with the largest amount of patents and patent applications to date..

Revealed: The race for graphene supremacy
Posted on January 16, 2013 by Robin Bromby
British broadcaster BBC seems to have stirred up a hornet’s nest with its reporting on what Roger Bade at London brokers Whitman Howard calls “the pathetic nature of graphene research in the UK”. He was alarmed by the report that Asian countries are snapping up the bulk of graphene patents, and the US is not far behind. “Yet another example of inventions made for others to exploit?” he asks..
