Sunwin International Neutraceuticals Forms a US Subsidiary to Distribute Stevia in the US
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL and QUFU, CHINA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/15/06 -- Sunwin International Neutraceuticals, Inc. (OTC BB: SUWN), an industry leader in the production and distribution of Chinese herbs, veterinary medicines and low calorie natural sweetener (Stevia) in China, has formed a wholly owned subsidiary, Sunwin Stevia International Corp, in order to aggressively market its Stevia throughout the US.
Stevia, a 100% natural sweetener, is extracted from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant, as a food additive which is used in various products such as beverages, foods, confections, and medicinal products in China and Japan. Forms of Stevia are approximately 300 times sweeter than general sucrose, with only 1/300th of the calories. Stevia is often referred to as the third generation of natural low calorie sweetener.
Mr. Laiwang Zhang, President and Chairman of Sunwin International, commented, "We are very excited about the potential that the US Stevia distribution can bring to the company. We have contracted marketing professionals to guide our operations in the US. We will start our operations in Florida and California. We believe there are tremendous needs for our Stevia in the US marketplace, as there are over 20.8 million diabetic patients and an additional 41 million Americans with pre-diabetes in the US."
Mr. Zhang further stated, "Obesity is at epidemic proportions, with the largest increase in young children. Stevia use by diabetics as well as health conscious individuals in the US has been growing substantially over the last 15 years. More and more parents are becoming aware of shopping for food products and supplements with reduced sugar levels. The average Stevia user spends $80 on product per year."

The Company sells stevioside on a wholesale basis to domestic food manufacturers and large foreign trade companies, which export the products to Japan, South Korea, as well as other countries in Southeast Asia and to a lesser extent globally. Stevioside is sanctioned by the Ministry of Health of China for use as a food additive and listed in the Sanitation Standard of Food Additives (GB2760). Similarly, stevia products are allowed to be sold as a food ingredient in much of Asia, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia, parts of South America, such as Brazil and Paraguay, some Eastern European countries and Switzerland, as well as Israel and South Africa. However, some major global markets, including the U.S., the European Union (EU) and Australia, where stevioside is permitted only as a dietary supplement, remain largely inaccessible to producers of stevia-based sweeteners. In the U.S., without a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) designation from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), stevia use is limited to the confines of the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act. As such, stevioside products are labeled, marketed and sold as dietary supplements, mostly in form of teas and shakes, but sometimes also as stand-alone extracts, which can effectively serve as sweeteners. The U.S. retail market for stevia products, which are primarily distributed through major health food stores like GNC and Whole Foods Market, although growing quickly, is currently estimated at only $20 million. The Company recently entered into an exclusive distribution agreement for its sweetener extract with United States Distribution Corp., which has strong relationships with 55,000 retail outlets across the U.S., including warehouses, mass retailers, grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, hotels, casinos, convention centers, stadium concessions, gas stations, convenience stores, and natural food chain stores. With superior taste than synthetic sweeteners and no known side effects, stevia products should eventually successfully compete within the $25 billion sweetener market in the U.S., as well as other industrialized markets currently dominated by aspartame-based products such as NutraSweet® or Equal®.
