U.S. asks Japan to dispatch Aegis ship to Indian Ocean

WASHINGTON (Kyodo) The United States asked Japan on Monday to dispatch a destroyer with the Aegis air defense system and P-3C antisubmarine surveillance aircraft as part of its support for the U.S. military campaign in Afghanistan, a top Japanese ruling party official said.
Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz made the request in talks with the secretaries general of the three ruling parties -- Taku Yamasaki of the Liberal Democratic Party, Tetsuzo Fuyushiba of New Komeito and Toshihiro Nikai of the New Conservative Party, Yamasaki said at a news conference after the meeting.
Wolfowitz called on Japan to extend the May 19 deadline for its logistic support for the U.S. campaign because there are still many operations to be carried out, and hoped for the dispatch of an Aegis-equipped vessel and P-3C aircraft, both of which have high intelligence-gathering capabilities, Yamasaki said.
Wolfowitz did not refer to specific areas where the destroyer and aircraft might be used, or their missions, he said.
The request could be related to U.S. plans to escalate its antiterrorism campaign, including a possible attack on Ira, which President George W. Bush claims is part of an "axis of evil."
Under theAntiterrorism Special Measures Law enacted Oct. 29, the Self-Defense Forces have sent several naval vessels to the Indian Ocean to refuel U.S. and British warships. The duration of the SDF dispatch was set from Nov. 20 to May 19.
The ruling bloc leaders told Wolfowitz that the three parties will closely consult with one another on the proposed extension of the deadline but avoided giving an immediate answer to the request for the dispatch, Yamasaki said.
At the news conference, however, the three coalition leaders were negative on the destroyer and P-3C dispatch.
"An immediate dispatch would be difficult under the current conditions. It is necessary to consider the missions and take into account the feelings of the Japanese people," Yamasaki said.
Fuyushiba said, "There is no need for the dispatch."
Nikai said this is not an issue for immediate discussions by the three parties.
In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda said at a news conference that the government was aware of the request. He added that the government will hear more about the request from the Yamasaki mission.
When the U.S. began its military campaign against targets in Afghanistan last October after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, Japan considered dispatching an Aegis destroyer to the Indian Ocean.
It decided against such a move, however, because there were objections within the ruling coalition, and the U.S. bombing of targets in Afghanistan eased after the collapse of the Taliban regime.
Opponents of the dispatch fear it could result in Japan's active engagement in war, which is prohibited under the pacifist Constitution.

Die Amsi wollen nachwievor den großen Dicken markieren und hacken nach wie vor auf der "Achse des Bösen" herum und wollen zu guter letzt mehr und mehr Länder in ihre Scheisse hineinreissen.

jetzt erst gesehen.Also Wolfowitz ist extra nach Japan gereist und hat Unterstützung erbeten in Form von einem Zerstörer mit dem Aegis Verteidigungssystem und drei Flugzeugen zur Uboot-überwachung.Für die Schiffe,die Japan zum Auftanken der Boote der anderen Kriegsbeteiligten in Afghanistan zur Verfügung gestellt hat,läuft die Zustimmung am 19.Mai ab.Die drei Koalitionsführer haben gesagt,sie würden darüber beraten.Auf der Newsconference jedoch sagte Yamasaki  man müsse Rücksicht auf die Gefühle der Japaner nehmen (würde das Schröder doch auch mal sagen zu den Deutschen!)Fuyushiba sagte ,es gäbe dafür keine Notwendigkeit.Nikai sagte,es gäbe keinen Grund zu einer unmittelbaren Beratung darüber.Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda sagte man sei sich der Bitte bewusst.
Die Gegner der Entsendung fürchten ,in einen Krieg verwickelt zu werden,was unter der pazufistischen Konstitution verboten ist.

@prawda :langsam kann ich nicht glauben,dass Du identisch bist mit mod,nee du bist so völlig anders in deiner Mentalität,dass er schon schizoid sein müsste und das ist er nicht.Also nehme ich an ,dass Ihr allenfalls denselben Ort zum Posten benutzt,denn deine Kommentare sind in der Regel wirklich unerträglich naiv und rechtslastig!Es geht hier um die "Terrorismusbekämpfung" durch Krieg,z.B. im Irak und nicht um Osama bin Laden.

Je größer der Einfluss der USA, desto legitimer ist es aus ihrer Sicht überall den Rüssel reinzuhalten.

Aber wohin Isolationismus, Größenwahn und Selbstüberschätzung führen können hat man ja schon des Öfteren erlebt.

Eines Tages wird sich die Einsicht durchsetzen, daß die USA nicht das Maß aller Dinge und schon gar nicht allmächtig sind. Schnorrer hat's schön beschrieben - irgendwann ist auch mit dem Wachstum auf Pump mal Schluss.

Vielleicht ist dieses ganze Konstrukt wesentlich fragiler als wir ahnen...

Iraq: still the eventual target
Although attention is currently concentrated on Israel, the longer-term aim of terminating the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq remains very much on the agenda. Military action may not happen for many months yet, not least because of the need to produce sufficient quantities of specialised munitions, but forces are already being gathered in the region. It has now been confirmed that a substantial expansion of base facilities in Qatar and Oman is under way, one reason being that there remains a question mark over Saudi willingness to allow their bases to be used in any attacks on Iraq.
Another indication of the US policy towards Iraq is the success of the US action in forcing the head of the Office for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) out of power. Jose Bustani of Brazil was regarded by the US as too supportive of the idea that Iraq might take up membership of the OPCW. If Iraq became subject to OPCW inspections, this would make it more difficult for the US to take military action later in the year.
Most analysts believe that, in the face of a likely US attack, the Saddam Hussein regime will appear to concede the need for UN inspections of its weapons of mass destruction facilities, playing out the process for as long as it possibly can. This would only delay, not prevent, a US attack. But the aim would be to enhance support across the region, making it more difficult for the United States to rely on assistance from neighbouring states.
There is, though, an alternative Iraqi strategy which would make war much more likely in the short term – even before the autumn. For the Saddam Hussein regime, the most important thing by far is regime survival, transcending all other political aims. If the regime is convinced that the Bush administration intends to destroy it, then it could well provoke a crisis that forces the United States to take military action long before it has the necessary forces to enable it to threaten the regime itself.
It is just possible that the current efforts by the Iraqis to upgrade their air defences might develop into a sustained process of infringements of the no-fly zone. This could happen within the next month, but might be more likely during the hottest time of the year in July. It would present Washington with a dilemma – either attack Iraq without the forces necessary to destroy the regime, or appear weak in the face of Iraqi provocation.
Iraq, in turn, could present its actions as legitimate defence, a tactic that would be readily accepted in much of the Arab world. It would come at a time when Iraq is gaining favour by its support for Palestinians, both through its embargo on oil exports and the monetary aid that it is feeding through to bereaved families and the newly homeless in the West Bank.

Peter Scholl-Latour reist für das ZDF durch den Irak

Peter Scholl-Latour hat die Bilder gemacht, Aufnahmen aus einem Land, das in absehbarer Zeit US-Angriffe zu erwarten hat. „Ungewissheit besteht lediglich über das Datum des Losschlagens und die Form des unvermeidlichen Bodenkriegs“, erklärt Scholl- Latour zu Beginn seiner Reportage „Irak im Fadenkreuz“ (Dienstag, ZDF, 21 Uhr). Sein Film hebt sich wohltuend von politischer Schwarz- Weiß-Rhetorik ab und setzt die Tugenden des Reporters dagegen: am Ort Informationen sammeln, Propaganda durch eigenen Augenschein ersetzen. Schwächen inbegriffen.

Da steht sie und winkt: eine Mickey Mouse, groß wie ein Mensch. Wie hat sich dieses durch und durch kapitalistische Tier nach Bagdad verirrt? Und nicht nur diese arabisch sprechende Mickey Mouse passt nicht in die gängige Vorstellung vom „Reich des Bösen“: Da fahren Kinder Kettenkarussell, auf der Einkaufsstraße drängen sich die Händler, und im Vergnügungsviertel drehen die reichen Söhne des Landes in ihren westlichen Luxuskarossen ihre Runden.

Dass sich Scholl-Latour trotz seiner Kontakte in der arabischen Welt nicht wirklich frei bewegen durfte, davon muss man ausgehen. Doch der Reporter verliert darüber kein Wort. Auch der zentrale Vorwurf, das Regime Saddams bedrohe Israel und den Westen mit Massenvernichtungswaffen, wird von Scholl-Latour lässig abgetan: Dass Saddam Giftgas (gegen die Kurden im Norden Iraks) eingesetzt hat und sein Aggressionspotenzial beim Einmarsch in Kuwait und durch die Raketen auf Israel im zweiten Golfkrieg unter Beweis stellte, lässt der Ex-Korrespondent unerwähnt. Dabei drohte Saddams Stellvertreter Tarik Aziz im Interview mit Scholl-Latour unverhohlen: Die Europäer würden „die Leidtragenden“ sein, wenn sich die Amerikaner nach dem Eingreifen in Palästina oder im Irak in ihre Heimat zurückziehen werden. Scholl-Latour verschweigt die diktatorischen Verhältnisse im Irak nicht, auch wenn er sie nicht bebildern kann.

Vor allem zeigt er viele Facetten eines Landes, besucht die nahezu autonomen Kurden im Norden, berichtet von der Toleranz gegenüber der christlichen Minderheit und über die Stimmung im schiitischen Süden, der sich im zweiten Golfkrieg gegen Saddam erhob und doch von den Amerikanern „ans Messer geliefert“ wurde. Bleibt die Frage, ob es nicht ein Armutszeugnis ist, dass ein 78-Jähriger „exklusiv für das ZDF“ von einem der politisch bedeutendsten Schauplätze berichtet und dafür 5000 Kilometer reist. Saudi Arabia terms it a military exercise near the Jordanian border. But Saudi opposition sources and Arab intelligence sources said Riyadh has amassed troops in the north as part of an effort to crack down on dissidents and prevent the infiltration of Hezbollah insurgents who seek to undermine the regime.

More than 10,000 troops from the National Guard and intelligence units are raiding suspected dissident and insurgency strongholds. The sources said hundreds of people have been detained and injured.

Saudi intelligence has long been worried by the stream of Hezbollah insurgents coming from Jordan. The sources said Hezbollah has sent agents – both Sunnis and Shi'ites – from Lebanon through Jordan and over the desert frontier.

From there, the Hezbollah agents have helped foment unrest among Saudi Arabia's large Shi'ite minority.

What is more alarming for the Saudi ruling family is that the Hezbollah insurgents are being helped by tribes in the north. For the family, this marks a further loss of control by the regime.

King Fahd has been incapacitated by Alzheimer's and Crown Prince Abdullah has marginalized his half-brother Defense Minister Prince Sultan, regarded as a rival in the power struggle for the throne.

The result threatens to become chaotic.

Nun, mir ist kein besserer Kenner der Szene bekannt...
 

biste auch noch da,damit hast Du wohl recht,ich frag mich nur,wann das gesendet wird oder ob ZDF es gar nicht zeigen darf?Denn im Programm Teletext kann ich es auch nicht finden-und interessant ist es sicher.In dem Artikel,den ich eben gepostet habe,steht auch,dass Hussein und Al Qaida offenbar auch keine Verbindung haben.Bush wird immer unmöglicher,auch mit seiner Unterstützung Israels und der Forderung einer Friedenskonferenz mit windelweichen Aussagen zur Landrückgabe,aber harten Forderungen an Palästina
