The part of the article I want to focus on is this...
"Dr. George has been a very significant asset to our business," Mr. Gale said. "His leadership and vision have enabled us to achieve some of our most important goals, including the development of our rapid products and our efforts to expand our business internationally. We are grateful for Dr. George's continuing counsel and involvement. While acting as interim Chief Executive Officer, I plan to spend the majority of my time in the United States managing the company's affairs and pushing forward both the efforts initiated by Dr. George as well as a number of potential business strategies."
I want to dissect this paragraph by bits and pieces to draw a picture of what I think our Company has become at this point. First of all, take a look at the second sentence, it says…“ His leadership and vision have enabled us to achieve some of our most important goals, including the development of our rapid products and our efforts to expand our business internationally” The first section of this sentence refers to Dr. George as a PART of something much bigger. Notice he said “enabled us.” I want to focus on the word “us.” For the past two and a half years most of us have recognized the people that make up Calypte as…Dr. George, Rick Brounstein and Dick Van Maanen. These names are synonymous with the name “Calypte” and rightly so. All of these men have been instrumental in the development and support of the products that make Calypte unique and valuable. Now two of these men are gone and one is part time but the “us” in that sentence refers to someone or some thing that Dr. George helped. It can’t be Mr. Gale because he’s the “interim” CEO and it can’t be the new CEO because he isn’t with the Company yet. The only ones left are Marr and the BOD. Some of you guys remember one of the CC’s we had where Dr. George and Rick announced they were going to do one final round of financing for 15 or 16 million. The BOD unanimously approved the decision and a proxy was issued. A few weeks after that those plans were changed and they decided to go for 8 million with a 5.5 million dollar loan from Marr. That change was never explained to us but behind the scenes the ones that made the decision had the power to change the plans of the CEO, CFO and BOD midstream. So the “us” in the first sentence must be the ones holding the purse strings – Marr. Now, I’m not saying this is something evil or that the decision was wrong, all I’m saying is, the people who support companies or individuals financially are often the ones who direct and make decisions for those they support.
Now look at the words “enabled us to achieve.” “Enabled” is past tense and “achieve” is accomplishing some task or job. So, Dr. George DID his job and COMPLETED the work he was to do for Marr. In other words he has finished the work he was commissioned to do and the abrupt resignation won’t hinder or stop the implementation of the business plan and its ultimate success.
The next part is “achieve some of our most important goals.” The word “some” is obviously referring to a number not making up the whole. So, there are other goals that Marr has. The most obvious is selling product and making a profit. But I don’t think they will settle for a small piece of the screening market. I think they want to take advantage of every avenue available to get these new products sold. What quantity comes to your mind with the word “some?” For me it means something less than the majority. So, if I’m right the phenomenal progress and the development of the assays and the vision of Dr. George are considered a smaller part of what Marr has planed.
He goes on to say “I plan to spend the majority of my time in the United States managing the company's affairs and pushing forward both the efforts initiated by Dr. George as well as a number of potential business strategies."
There are two things here. One is the “efforts by Dr. George” and the other is “potential business strategies.” The efforts by Dr. George would be considered everything he was doing before he resigned. He’s most likely referring to all the work of getting distributors, conducting clinicals and getting approvals for the rapid tests. You can also add the Incidence test to the list. Personally, I’m not sure how the relationship is with the interim CEO and the CDC. Dr. George’s connections with the people in the CDC together with his abilities have played an important role in the development and marketing of the Incidence test. We will have to wait to see if this part of the business will suffer as a result of his resignation. Keep in mind that Dr. George is also in an advisory position so he may continue to be the connection with the CDC, at least until that part of the business is fully established and can run on its own.
Now, the last part of that sentence where it says “potential business strategies” is the most interesting to me. What are the “business strategies” that have “potential?” The thing that comes to mind from the words “business strategies” is the ability to tap in to established entities for the purpose of marketing products. This could be referring to any company or companies with a pipeline to large markets i.e. the big pharmacies that can sell product to end users through there existing sales force. This is the only thing that comes to mind on this subject for me so some of you who have a broader understanding of what “business strategies” is, can give your opinion.
Those of you who have more experience in these kinds of things have expressed the positive aspects of the recent developments. As I’ve said before, I’m very thankful for your insight into these things and I can see the importance of them but I will miss Dr. George. For me it will be a loss but the reasons I purchased my stock are monetary and if that means this change must take place then so be it, I just wish it had been done with tact and grace. He deserved it.
These are just my opinions.

Niveau

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore., Oct 11, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Calypte Biomedical Corporation (Amex: HIV) today announced that it has received notification that Aware(TM) BSP, its rapid blood test for HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies, has been successfully evaluated by government agencies in Malaysia.
In Malaysia, favorable government evaluation is generally requested although not strictly required to market HIV tests.
Aware(TM) BSP is a twenty-minute rapid test designed to detect HIV antibodies in whole blood, serum, or plasma. It is one test in a line of three such assays, the other two being designed to detect HIV antibodies in oral fluid and urine. The health authorities in Malaysia have not evaluated non-blood HIV tests in the past, and are determining how such evaluations should be undertaken.
"We're delighted our Aware HIV-1/2 products continue to perform well in clinical evaluations around the world. Now that the Aware BSP test has passed this evaluation, we look forward to working with Belantara Sains Teknologi (BST), our Malaysian distributor, to commercially launch the product," stated Roger Gale, Calypte's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Christine Lim, BST's Chief Operating Officer, added, "The support that we had from Calypte Biomedical prompted us to have these kits evaluated via a recognized body. This has created a higher confidence for our customers who have had some bad experiences from the unevaluated kits which are so vastly available in this eastern part of the world. Now we can look forward to working more closely not only with the Ministry of Health but especially with the health clinics in the remote areas, where a kit as convenient as this is certainly useful, practical and most importantly, reliable."
Malaysia, with a population of roughly 24 million, has an estimated 55,000 HIV infections, according to the CIA Fact book, 2003.
