..In recent trading, shares of Applied Materials, Inc. (Symbol: AMAT) have crossed above the average analyst 12-month target price of $125.00, changing hands for $128.64/share. When a stock reaches the target an analyst has set, the analyst logically has two ways to react: downgrade on valuation, or, re-adjust their target price to a higher level. ... perhaps it is time for that target price to be raised.
There are 16 different analyst targets contributing to that average for Applied Materials, Inc., but the average is just that — a mathematical average. There are analysts with lower targets than the average, including one looking for a price of $56.00. And then on the other side of the spectrum one analyst has a target as high as $150.00.
...investors in AMAT have been given a good signal to spend fresh time assessing the company and deciding for themselves: is $125.00 just one stop on the way to an even higher target, or has the valuation gotten stretched to the point where it is time to think about taking some chips off the table?

Shares of Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) rose 13% in March, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
The leading semiconductor equipment company by revenue continued to benefit as the global race in advanced chip production heated up, amid severe semiconductor shortages across a broad range of applications.Applied Materials had already been up strongly on the year, amid a blowout February earnings report, as well as increased spending forecasts from large customer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) in January. Widespread reports of a severe semiconductor shortage this year have also pushed sentiment higher for Applied as well.
The good news kept on coming in March, when Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) held an event updating investors on its future production strategy. Intel has struggled with its 7-nanometer chip production in recent years, ...
That means there will be another large buyer for Applied Materials' machines, as companies and countries around the world seek to own significant in-country chip production.

"...There's a shortage of semiconductors around the world, and Applied Materials is one of the companies that can help bring more supply into the market. Applied Materials supplies semiconductor manufacturing equipment to foundries, which then use it to fabricate chips and circuits.

Not surprisingly, Applied Materials has witnessed a sharp acceleration in demand for its equipment over the past year, reflected in its terrific results quarter after quarter. The company delivered record revenue and non-GAAP earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2021. Revenue shot up 24% year over year to $5.16 billion, while adjusted earnings jumped 42% to $1.39 per share.
Applied Materials is on track to sustain such impressive growth for a long time to come as the company is witnessing a continued spike in demand for chips across different verticals. For 2021, Applied Materials sees higher capital spending in the memory market and increased investment in foundry capacity. .....

Citi selects Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) as its top semiconductor equipment pick as the firm now expects both memory and logic wafer fab equipment spending to grow evenly this year versus the prior prediction for outsized memory spend.
Applied Materials has the most balanced memory and logic mix among its WFE peers, says Citi.
Citi expects all of the WFE companies to benefit from the capex wars among the foundry giants and the $50B in domestic semiconductor investments included in President Biden's $2T infrastructure plan.
Applied Materials shares are down 3.4% with the broader semiconductor pullback after a bearish Susquehanna note and UK action against the Nvidia-Arm deal.

"Applied Materials (AMAT) also provides lithography equipment, as well as other machinery used in fabs like gas pumps and inspection machines. AMAT also has a business segment dedicated to the ultra-high definition OLED display manufacturing industry, providing another area of exposure to some of the highest-growth areas of the tech world.
Service revenue also features prominently here at just under one-quarter of sales. Software is again the key as the company helps its customers increase the output and utility of their fab equipment.

AMAT is not growing nearly as fast as ASML is. Revenue increased "only" 24% year over year in its latest quarter, and the company is anticipating a 36% rise during the next one. However, it too is enjoying an even faster pace of earnings growth as its customers buy new equipment and complementary software."

Our most recent consensus estimate is calling for quarterly revenue of $5.39 billion, up 36.27% from the year-ago period.
Looking at the full year, our Zacks Consensus Estimates suggest analysts are expecting earnings of $5.98 per share and revenue of $21.68 billion. These totals would mark changes of +43.41% and +26.01%, respectively, from last year...."

"..The shares have come under selling pressure since hitting its high on April 5 at $146. This action has repeated over the past several months as the price has dipped to its 50-day line on three separate occasions before proceeding to new highs. The result has been a textbook bullish staircase pattern with a series of higher highs.
If the market remains healthy, we view this as another consolidation phase that could lead to new highs. Its relative strength remains strong and it’s trading above both its 50 and 200-day lines.."
