SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 5, 2013
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) today announced that it is designing and building high efficiency SunPower solar power systems for 16 schools in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) in Oakland, Calif. Once completed in 2014, the district estimates it will reduce electricity costs at those facilities by 46 percent.
"Our contract with SunPower will enable Oakland Unified School District to maximize our use of clean renewable energy, dramatically reduce utility expenses, and use the savings to enhance academic programs," said OUSD Superintendent Dr. Gary Yee. "We will also have the opportunity to take advantage of linked learning initiatives such as the successful SunPower Solar Academy, which integrates real world work experience with rigorous academic programs to inspire students while preparing them for college and careers."
SunPower is installing 3.6 megawatts of systems at the 16 schools, using SunPower solar panels, the most efficient and reliable panels on the market today. The systems include rooftop solar arrays and solar shade structures in school parking lots, which take advantage of underutilized space and provide needed shade.
"Oakland Unified School District can rely on its SunPower solar systems to deliver guaranteed performance for the next 25 years or more," said Howard Wenger, SunPower president, regions. "SunPower works with school districts across California to reduce operating costs and repurpose the savings to the classroom. It is extremely rewarding to partner with our public schools to deliver needed savings, while inspiring teachers and students with the great power and potential of the sun."
According to estimates provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, OUSD solar power systems will avoid production of approximately 80,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 30 years, the equivalent of removing 15,210 cars from California's roads.
SunPower is a leader in delivering energy solutions to California's school districts. The company has delivered more than 61 megawatts of on-site solar power systems for 23 school districts across the state.
The SunPower Solar Academy is a summer project- and work-based learning program that is delivered over the course of one week in each participating district, immersing district students and teachers in a solar-focused curriculum that emphasizes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Approximately 250 students from ten California school districts participated during the 2013 summer session.

NEW YORK, Dec. 9, 2013
NEW YORK, Dec. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ross Solar Group, a SunPower Elite Dealer, has completed New York City's largest rooftop solar installation for Jetro Cash and Carry at the company's Hunts Point Restaurant Depot facility in the Bronx, N.Y.
The 1.56-megawatt system is also the first to integrate a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that allows Con Edison to remotely monitor and control the system. The SCADA system adds an enhanced level of resiliency to Con Edison's grid, helping to protect the utility's customers from power outages such as those that occurred during Hurricane Sandy.
"The Jetro project demonstrates that large solar installations are viable in New York City, and we hope to see other businesses follow their lead," said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. "The smart grid employed here is exactly the kind of innovative solution that New York State needs to increase the resiliency of the grid and protect residents from power outages."
Jetro is a wholesale cash and carry foodservice supplier offering a broad selection of products to independent restaurants, caterers and non-profits.
"We considered a solar project for several years, but we wanted to make certain that it made financial sense for us as a company, and that the returns met our requirements," said Jetro Vice President Peter Claro, "Ross Solar Group's willingness to work within our specific guidelines, as well as their commitment to quality and full transparency were strong factors in our decision to move forward."
Jetro's rooftop system is comprised of 4,760 high-efficiency SunPower solar panels, the most efficient solar panels available on the market today. It is expected to generate in excess of 1.8 million kilowatt hours of clean energy per year. According to estimates provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the system will offset more than 1,212 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the equivalent of removing almost 7,000 cars from New York's roads over the next 30 years.
"We applaud Jetro's commitment to implementing leading technology that will deliver operational savings for the company and a secure and reliable renewable energy future for New York," said Robert Kline, director of commercial sales for Ross Solar. "We also credit Governor Cuomo's NY-Sun initiative and our partnerships with Con Edison and SunPower for the success of this project."
The solar system installation was made possible through awards that Ross Solar received from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through Governor Cuomo's NY-Sun initiative.

SAN JOSE, Calif. and TOKYO, Dec. 17, 2013
SAN JOSE, Calif. and TOKYO, Dec. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWR), a leading solar technology and energy services provider, today announced that it has signed multiple supply agreements with Ecomax Japan Inc. to purchase SunPower Corporation's high efficiency E20/327 solar panels totaling 20-megawatts (MW). In 2014, Ecomax plans to install the solar panels at several locations in Central and Northern Japan.
Acting as EPC (engineering, procurement and construction), Ecomax will construct multiple mega solar power plants in Gunma, totaling 13 MW for its customer, Farmdo, a company dedicated to assisting farmers and supporting agriculture in Japan. With the remaining 7 MW, Ecomax will build and operate solar installations and plans to sell the energy to local utility companies. It will also own 3 MW as an IPP (Independent Power Producer).
"We are pleased to partner with SunPower Corporation to install its high efficiency E20/327 solar panels, the most reliable on the market today," said Tadanaga Komori, President for Ecomax Japan Inc. "Our environmentally conscious customers such as Farmdo will benefit from clean energy generated by these solar systems."
Ecomax has signed an extension to the existing solar panel purchase agreement with SunPower Corporation and will continue to buy the E20/327 solar panels for its future installations.
"SunPower Corporation is pleased to partner with Ecomax, extending our presence in Japan's mega solar power plant and commercial rooftop generation markets," said Howard Wenger, SunPower Corporation president, regions. "Our high efficiency solar panels and systems are a strong fit for Japan given the country's buildable land constraints and high grid interconnection costs."
Integrated into the E20/327 solar panels by SunPower Corporation are its Maxeon® all-back contact solar cells. These cells are built on a solid copper foundation, making them extremely resistant to cracking, corrosion and stresses from temperature variation. With an efficiency of 20.1 percent, the E20/327 panels deliver more power in the same amount of space and maximize system output with fewer panels installed.
The company's solar panels are backed by the company's straightforward 25-year combined product and power warranty. It offers the industry's lowest power degradation with more warranted energy, resulting in an unprecedented 87 percent power level at the end of 25 years.

FRESNO, Calif., Dec. 18, 2013
FRESNO, Calif., Dec. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR), a leading solar technology and global energy services provider, and Fresno-based SunPower Elite Dealer Pacific Solar announced today that they are donating a solar power system to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, thanks to the first 50 Fresno area households that bought or financed SunPower systems during the company's "Let's Solar Fresno" campaign that launched in August.
As part of the campaign, SunPower and Pacific Solar agreed to donate one high efficiency solar panel to the zoo for each SunPower system sold or leased in Fresno in August, up to a total of 50 panels, and a majority of the cost of the installation.
"We're grateful to the first 50 Fresno families who chose to go solar with SunPower and, as a result, are helping Fresno Chaffee Zoo go solar as well," said Terri Mejorado, director of marketing at Fresno Chaffee Zoo. "We expect the system will allow us to lower our electricity bills, and use those savings to enhance the programs and services we offer the community."
The donated system will be composed of 50 high-efficiency SunPower solar panels, the most efficient and reliable solar panels available on the market today.
"I'm impressed by how quickly Fresno families met this challenge to enable the zoo to benefit from clean, renewable solar power," said Dave Wasemiller of Pacific Solar. "SunPower panels deliver more energy in less space, maximizing savings and peace of mind. This is an amazing opportunity for our community."
The SunPower system will be installed in two arrays, one on the zoo's education department building and one on the sea lion exhibit, "Sea Lion Cove." According to estimates provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the system is expected to offset the production of almost 13 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, which is equivalent to the automobile emissions produced through the consumption of about 1,300 gallons of gasoline.
"As the leading manufacturer of residential solar power systems in the U.S., SunPower is proud to support Fresno's efforts to become the most solar community in America," said SunPower Vice President Martin DeBono. "SunPower offers financing options customized for our customers' needs, including cash purchase, leases and the SunPower Loan, which allows customers to go solar with no money down and low monthly payments while progressing towards owning their solar system."
Pacific Solar offers all of SunPower's financing options and works directly with customers to design customized energy and financing plans, and solar systems to fit each family's needs.

PHOENIX and SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 9, 2014
PHOENIX and SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- MidAmerican Solar and SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWR) announced that the first portion of the 579-megawatt Solar Star development – two projects co-located in Kern and Los Angeles counties in California – was successfully synchronized and is now delivering energy to the California ISO grid.
"This announcement is significant for the state of California," said Mike Fehr, MidAmerican Solar's general manager at the Solar Star projects. "It demonstrates that we are fulfilling our promise to the local community and regulators and delivering expected results, based on our construction timeline, to help California meet its mandate to generate 33 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2020. We want to thank the many stakeholders that made this milestone possible, including California ISO, Southern California Edison, county officials, local community members and contractors. We remain committed to safely constructing one of the largest solar developments in the world in the Antelope Valley area."
The Solar Star projects are owned by MidAmerican Solar. SunPower designed and is constructing the projects, and will provide operations and maintenance services. Construction on the projects began in early 2013 and is expected to be complete by year-end 2015.
"We are pleased to connect and synchronize Solar Star's first SunPower Oasis Power Blocks, totaling 57 megawatts, to the grid," said Jorg Heinemann, SunPower executive vice president, customer operations and engineering, procurement and construction. "The project partners are working well together and with the community to deliver one of the world's largest solar power plants on schedule."
The projects currently employ approximately 600 workers at the site.
"The Solar Star projects are creating needed jobs and providing economic opportunities in the Rosamond, Lancaster and Palmdale communities and surrounding areas," said Paulette Rush, MidAmerican Solar's community relations specialist for the Solar Star projects. "We're committed to working hand-in-hand with the development's neighbors and supporters and look forward to celebrating our milestones with the local community. This most recent announcement is quite an accomplishment considering construction began just one year ago."
The development is expected to generate more than $500 million in regional economic benefits, the majority of which will be generated during construction. Southern California Edison will purchase electricity from the projects under two long-term power purchase contracts.
"Utility-scale solar power is a competitively priced renewable resource, and a key part of Southern California Edison's energy mix," said Stuart Hemphill, senior vice president of Power Supply for Southern California Edison. "These Solar Star projects will help us continue to grow our renewable portfolio on behalf of our customers."
When complete, the 579-megawatt Solar Star projects are expected to have more than 1.7 million panels installed, covering 3,230 acres. MidAmerican Solar estimates that the projects will provide electricity equivalent to powering nearly 255,000 average California households. According to estimates provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, electricity generated from the projects will displace approximately 570,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year – the equivalent of taking more than 100,000 cars off the road.
