Globally, Rakuten Symphony has three large greenfield 5G deployment deals with telecom operators, including German telco 1&1 and US telco Dish. The executive said the company now focuses on getting OpenRAN deals from global brownfield operators, including telecom operators in India.
“OpenRAN is the defect technology for Greenfield deployments. Many large telcos, including the Vodafone Group and Telefonica, have done trials and run proof of concepts. After the AT&T deal with Ericsson for OpenRAN, all other telcos have accelerated their plans to introduce OpenRAN in their networks,” Sriwastawa said.
The company is open to starting discussions with older Indian telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea for OpenRAN-related 5G deployments, Srivastava said.
“...we just started the discussion with Airtel. Their first phase of 5G is almost done. Depending on their OpenRAN strategy, we will proceed,” he said.
Rakuten already works with the Sunil Mittal-led telco for small-cell deployment in the country. "It's a small deployment. But now, Indian telco's focus on small cells is increasing to support the 5G network. We will make pitches again in the small cell space in India."
The Japanese company will also initiate talks with cash-strapped telco Vodafone Idea for OpenRAN 5G deployment.
Cash-strapped Vodafone Idea is exploring both OpenRAN and vRAN technologies to reduce the cost of deployment for its upcoming 5G network. Last year, it began a proof of concept (PoC) with Korea’s Samsung for virtualised RAN or VRAN and Mavenir for OpenRAN-based 5G network.

Rakuten Mobile announced plans to launch a satellite-to-mobile broadband service in Japan starting from 2026 with AST SpaceMobile. At the press conference, Rakuten Mobile Chairman Mickey Mikitani and AST SpaceMobile Chairman and CEO Abel Avellan spoke about their vision for the project as well as mid- to long-term strategy. The actual timing of the initiation of any such service and the scope of such service is uncertain and is subject to a number of factors, including those that are outside of the control of Rakuten and AST SpaceMobile.

Today, we hear from Marcos Milanez, chief content officer at Rakuten TV, the European video-on-demand service, about the shifting streamer landscape, growth of ad-supported over subscription, FAST channels and more.
Spain-based Rakuten TV offers a mix of buy-to-own, rental and ad-supported streaming services to some 140 million homes across Europe, having grown out of Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten’s purchase of businesses including Wuaki.tv and TalkTalk TV over the last decades.
A familiar brand alongside Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on many a smart TV remote control, the company has long-standing partnerships with Hollywood studios and has moved into live sports and original documentaries in recent years.

Daiwa Securities Group Inc. will issue its debut digital bonds to individuals and pay interest using Rakuten Group Inc.’s electronic money, the first such public offering in Japan.
Daiwa will sell ¥1 billion ($6.7 million) of one-year 0.8% notes, according to a regulatory filing, in the latest example of a broadening range of fundraising in recent months in Japan’s corporate bond market.
Daiwa’s digital company notes are new in that they are publicly offered and interest payments are made in the form of e-money.
Daiwa Securities Co. and Rakuten Securities Inc. will underwrite the offering.

BARCELONA, February 26, 2024 - NOW Telecom Company, Inc. (“NOW Telecom”) and Rakuten Symphony today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a collaborative framework for the deployment of a 5G Open RAN Pilot Deployment in the Philippines. The MoU was signed on Day 1 of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain held from February 26 until Feb 29. The MWC is the largest and most influential connectivity event in the world hosted by the GSM Association and draws more than 100,000 visitors from over 190 countries.
Under the terms of the agreement, Rakuten Symphony and NOW will collaborate with the aim of developing disaggregated networks and open interfaces in the South-East Asian country. The MOU was signed by Hironori Shimada, Director of Rakuten Symphony, and Romeo C. Escobar, Jr., Head of Networks for NOW Telecom. This significant event was also witnessed by Mickey Mikitani, Chairman and CEO of Rakuten Group, Inc. and Mel Velasco Velarde, NOW Telecom Chairman and Chief Advocate of the Trusted Network Alliance in Indo-Pacific Region.
