Der Technologiekonzern Sun Microsystems befindet sich in Verhandlungen mit allen größeren Providern der USA, um StarOffice als webbasierten Dienst verfügbar zu machen. Die Office-Suite könnte damit von den Kunden der ISPs über den Browser genutzt werden. Je nach Nutzungsdauer und benötigtem Service und Support sollen Lizenzen Gebühren zwischen 2 und 45 Dollar liegen, berichtet das britische Onlinemagazin 'The Register' heute. Der Konzern hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, dem Marktführer Microsoft bis Ende 2004 zehn Prozent der Marktanteile abzunehmen.
Dem soll auch eine Offensive im Einzelhandel dienen. Mit verschiedenen großen Handelsketten werden Gespräche über das Angebot des Softwarepaketes in den Geschäften geführt. So sollen vor allem deutlich mehr Privatkunden gewonnen werden, die nach Ansicht Suns besonders leicht über den Preis zum Wechsel bewegt werden können. Schließlich kostet StarOffice lediglich einen Bruchteil eines gleichwertigen Microsoft Office-Paketes. Doch auch für Unternehmen ist die Software je nach Zahl der erworbenen Lizenzen mit 25 bis 50 Dollar deutlich günstiger.
Der deutsche Mobilfunkanbieter Mobilcom hatte StarOffice bereits als webbasierte Anwendung im Einsatz. Mit dem Mobile Office-Produkt m_desk konnte der Nutzer von jedem vernetzten Rechner auf seinen eigenen Office-Bildschirm mit Bürosoftware, eingebundenen Nachrichten und E-Mail-Postfach zurückgreifen.

Bei dem Unternehmen selbst sehe ich folgende Probleme: Zu große Konkurrenz durch IBM und HP, und auch durch Dell. Warum sollte man also noch einen Sun-Server kaufen?

Developed by more than 50 wireless industry leaders worldwide to extend the base collection of Java technologies for mobile devices, MIDP 2.0 supports new and enhanced gaming, graphics, video, audio, security, and many other features for mobile devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistants.

Wireless Industry standardizes on Java technology for wireless data services More than 50 million Java-technology enabled handsets have already been shipped worldwide by major carriers, representing all the main wireless network systems, including GSM/GPRS, CDMA, PDC, iDEN, and W-CDMA. Twenty of the world's leading carriers currently offer 29 deployments of Java-technology based mobile services in Asia, Europe and the United States. More than 30 additional deployments are planned or in trial.

With the availability of MIDP 2.0, manufacturers and service providers will be able to quickly and cost-effectively deliver increased functionality, more robust applications and a better user experience to mobile devices using the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) platform. Providing the foundation for highly graphical and intuitive mobile applications, MIDP 2.0 now brings the following new features: -- Enhanced user interface: MIDP 2.0 improves the overall end-user experience with several enhancements to that make applications more interactive and easier to use. It also provides greater extensibility and a more flexible layout for increased application portability across a wide range of devices with differing screen sizes. -- Media support: MIDP 2.0 allows developers to leverage the full audio capabilities of each device, adding audio such as tones, tone sequences and WAV files to MIDP applications using a standard platform. -- Game support: MIDP 2.0 adds a Game API that provides a standard foundation for building rich games, taking advantage of native device graphics capabilities to simplify development and provide greater control over graphics and performance. -- Expanded connectivity: MIDP 2.0 adds support for leading connectivity standards beyond HTTP, such as HTTPS, datagram, sockets, server sockets, and serial port communication, providing applications different way to exchange data with back-end services. -- Push architecture: MIDP 2.0 includes a server push model whereby MIDlets can be registered to be activated when a device receives information from a server. MIDP is a set of Java(TM) APIs that, together with the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC), provides a complete J2ME application runtime environment to support the majority of low-cost mobile information devices in use today, including mobile phones, digital assistants, and two-way pagers. sun muss erstmal deutlich den turn schaffen. der alte glanz ist weg. wenn die sich aber mit ihren servern wieder nach vorne kämpfen können, dann ist die aktie ein schnäppchen. wenn nicht - dann schreibe ich den rest ab.
für neue investments setze ich eher auf die klassen-stärksten - wie dell. wobei dell im moment einfach kein schnäppchen ist. da musste man schon etwas eher kaufen.

Sony wird seine PCs für den europäischen Privatkundenbereich zukünftig mit der Office-Suite StarOffice 6.0 von Sun Microsystems ausliefern. Dies bestätigte Isabel Milojevic von Suns PR-Agentur Essential Media heute gegenüber de.internet.com. Ausschlaggebend für die Entscheidung sei der deutlich geringere Preis gegenüber vergleichbaren Produkten von Microsoft gewesen. Die PCs mit StarOffice werden ab dem Jahresende in Großbritannien, Frankreich, Spanien, Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz angeboten.
In den USA liefert Sony seine PCs im Consumer-Segment mit WordPerfect von Corel aus. Auch andere Hersteller wie Hewlett Packard sind bereits auf Alternativen zu Microsoft umgestiegen oder bieten mehrere Wahlmöglichkeiten an. Für Europa ist StarOffice jedoch besser geeignet, da die Software in allen benötigten Sprachversionen zur Verfügung steht. Weder Sun noch Corel haben jedoch bisher Details zur Preisgestaltung für OEM-Partner bekannt gegeben. (ck)

Der US-Softwarekonzern Sun hat eine Vereinbarung getroffen, nach der alle 1,1 Millionen Schüler, Studenten und Lehrkräfte Dänemarks die Bürosoftware StarOffice 6.0 kostenlos erhalten. Der Vertrag wurde mit UNI-C, Dänemarks IT-Zentrum für Forschung und Ausbildung geschlossen, berichtet die dänische Tageszeitung 'Jyllands-Posten' heute. "UNI-C will dem dänischen Bildungsbereich helfen. Deshalb sind wir selbstverständlich froh, dass wir eine solch außergewöhnliche Initiative von Sun vermitteln können," sagt Dorte Olesen, Verwaltungsdirektorin von UNI-C dem Blatt.
Wer sich die Software nicht gratis downloaden will, kann die CD-ROM zu einem Selbstkostenpreis von umgerechnet 1,35 Euro erwerben. Schulen können StarOffice in Paketen zu je 50 Stück kaufen.
Bildungsministerin Ulla Tørnæs hatte den Bildungseinrichtungen gestattet, solche Gratisangebot für Bürosoftware anzunehmen, wenn Softwaregeschenke dem Staat keine Kosten verursachen und UNI-C den Vertrieb der Lizenzen übernimmt. UNI-C ist auch Betreiber des dänischen Forschungsnetzes DENet.
Falls die 1,1 Millionen Menschen im dortigen Bildungswesen das Angebot nutzen, beläuft sich der Gesamtwert laut Sun Microsystems auf ca. 27 Millionen Euro. (as)
