Lord of the Rings 2

Tolkien fans flocked to the movies this weekend, sending "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" to the top of the charts with a $61.5 million take, according to preliminary box-office estimates obtained Sunday.

In just five days, the sequel outpaced the "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," bringing in $101.5 million for AOL Time Warner's New Line studio since Wednesday vs. $71.5 million for its predecessor in the same time frame.

The Two Towers opened in 8 percent more theaters than the original and averaged close to $17,000 a theater over the weekend. The first movie brought in an average of $14,000.

New Line Cinema, the distributor of "The Two Towers," expects the film to bring in 20 to 25 percent more than the worldwide gross of $860 million generated by "Fellowship." Only "Titanic" has surpassed the $1 billion mark.
